What is the Millennium Challenge Account - Malawi?
The Millennium Challenge Account – Malawi (MCA-M) was established in March 2008 by the Government of Malawi. This followed Malawi’s qualification in December 2007 for Compact Assistance from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC, www.mcc.gov) , a US Government foreign aid agency.
The MCA-M has been tasked with the mandate to implement various activities that will lead to the development of a Compact that will provide investments for various projects that will stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty in the country.
Investments in Malawi’s Power Project Extremely Urgent - Says MCC VP
The projects being proposed for investment under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact agreement are extremely urgent for Malawi, says Darius Teter, the MCC Acting Vice President in the Department of Compact Development.
Speaking during a four day visit to Malawi, which started on 18 May 2010, Teter commended the Government of Malawi for prioritising investments in the power sector.
Malawi’s Power Sector Financial, Legal and Policy Issues Under Review
The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) has engaged a consultant to determine the financial, legal and policy issues that should be addressed under the Malawi Power project. The financial and management review of the power sector was officially launched in Lilongwe on Monday, 17 May 2010.
The consultants will among other things assess and review options available in the design of the Malawi power sector industry and develop recommendations on the most effective power industry structure in the country.
