Since July 2009, the MCC Transaction Team and the MCA-Malawi Core team have been working to further develop projects in the energy and transport sectors.
a) Energy The teams have been working on further project development of the most urgent proposed projects in energy and the associated interventions in natural resource management. These include: 1. Improving the availability of quality and reliable power i. Rehabilitation of existing hydro- power stations ii. Installation of meters to reduce peak demand growth iii. Rehabilitation, strengthening and upgrading of the transmission system iv. Improve protection, control and data acquisition for the T & D system 2. Increasing access to power for un-served users i. Rehabilitation of the distribution systems in all regions of the country ii. Network extension in peri-urban areas iii. Development of a renewable off-grid power source for rural communities using output-based aid 3. Improving and effectively managing the power sector for improved household service delivery 4. Improving water resource and land management in priority catchments in the Shire River Basin i. To help alleviate weed and siltation problems which affect the operations of power plants ii. Protect water, soil and other natural resources vital to rural lives and livelihoods b) Transport Further due diligence is being conducted of the proposed feeder roads project. Due diligence is being conducted to strengthen the rationale and economic viability of the roads proposed and also to ensure that the interventions are contextualised within the Government of Malawi’s Road Sector Programme.
